Gooper Ghost "Squisher"

You can't have Real Ghostbuster Toys without slime. They just go together. Hell, these toys were MADE for each other. Enter the line of Gooper Ghosts. There's plenty of fun to have by shoving one of your Ghostbusters into the maw of one of these plastic abominations and watching them slobber all over them. There was a Banshee Bomber, Bubbler, and Squisher Ghost. I was lucky enough to own the Squisher Ghost, as you can see.

Essentially "Squisher" is mounted on a plug which is vaguely...indecent in it's appearance. Sliding a good amount of sludge inside the loading tube and jam the upper torso down on the plunger to pump the slime out the nostrils and roof of the mouth.

It's a hideous apparatus for gunging figures. In order to clean it, you have to pull it apart. God help you if you leave this thing somewhere in your closet for the slime to dry.

The actual sliming mechanic left much to be desired, but some of the details were especially interesting. Note the detail on the tongue. The lever on the back allowed it to roll up and down ridgidly as your figure wallowed about in snot and drool.

The toy itself stands pretty tall.

For this exhibit, we'll be using Raven from Teen Titans, because she hates it.

The Flushomatic

Argh! Slime Pitted is about more than mindlessly gunging- no it's not.

The Flushomatic was released in 1989 by Playmates and was probably, in my opinion, one of the more memorable Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle playset/vehicle gimmicks. In some circles, the Flushomatic was more awesome than the pizza-throwing tank or the double barreled plunger gun. Definitely it was far superior to the slime catapult, which hardly ever worked.

The Flushomatic was cool for the obvious reason that it was a god damn toilet. You tie up your victim below and just chunk gloop down the chute. Yes! This is why kids loved TMNT. They were a bunch of filty mutant ninjas who hung around all day in the sewers, so their toy line was allowed to be as screwed up as possible. If it wasn't a boat with electric eels mounted on the front, then you maybe had giant alligator man with a bear trap and a shotgun or a big ass android with a brain inside it's stomach.

The Flush-O-Matic was the simplest "playset" to put together, but by no means the sturdiest. Basically you had four parts. You had the platform, which was connected by two support beams that really didn't provide much support. You had the slime tray below where you strap them suckers down for the FURY, and then you had the throne itself snapped on the top. Of course, then you got to stick on all the little stickers to give it flair. Notice the little roll of toilet paper above the lime-colored lever. It's the little things like these that bring tears to my eyes.

Something was lost in translation here.

Quite possibly the last of the really gross and truly bent action figure playsets have come and gone. Perhaps there's hope for the future, but until then, allow us a test run of the old girl using Naru from Love Hina as our victim. No straps necesarry. She volunteered. Enjoy.

MEET THE SLIME PIT

The Slime Pit was released as a playset in Mattel's line of Masters of the Universe Toys back in the 1980s. Basically it is a large throne topped with a dinosaur skull which vomited forth ooze. There is a lever-like claw fixed at the base for pinning figures in place. It belonged to The Evil Horde's branch of toys.

Anything involving slime was considered awesome during the 80's and so kids would be willing to murder their own parents just to own one despite it's simple design. At least I was.

According to Mattel's storyline, the slime was capable of rendering it's victims into mindless slaves too. Cool.

The original comic included with the toy details the story, which is available for viewing on He-Man.org.

Using the pit isn't exactly rocket science. You simply pour the slime into the top of the skull and and slowly tip it forward. Getting it to work the way you want to is a bit of a challenge. Mattel slime was probably the best when it came to consistency and...sliminess. But you'll either wait hours for the ooze to drape down out of the mouth or all at once the entire jiggling mass will plop out and bounce besides it's target.

For what it was worth, the Slime Pit is really a one-trick pony and doesn't have any other function other than puking out goo onto your favorite(?) action figure. Though in the world of playsets , it is probably one of the few (aside from this gem) created specifically for the torture/brainwashing of your toys. And maybe that's what makes this playset so damn endearing.

Plus, it's versatile.

Get in there god damn it.
